As the year has just turned around you may be among the millions making new year resolutions such as to really boost your productivity in 2024 and making it the best year ever. For mompreneurs who are juggling everything at once, no matter how hard we try, sometimes things tend to go haywire.
If you’re really looking to get everything done and reduce your stress levels, one of your main focus areas this year should be to Challenge Yourself to be more productive. Being more productive means accomplishing more tasks and really supercharging our multitasking abilities. Here are 6 tips to help you boost your productivity in 2024 as we juggle business and family with a smile.
In order to boost your productivity you need to rock your goals like the mom boss you truly are. First, you need to set your resolutions or goals for the new year. This exercise should not be taken lightly as it can make a difference in whether you’re successful or not.
There are many methods to set goals from creating Vision Boards to elaborate Business or yearly Life Plans. Whichever you choose, goal setting should involve:
-
- Setting SMART Goals – realistic yet exciting
- Planning Your Work – Setting a Plan to Achieve your goals by breaking them down to bite sized, conquerable items
- Working your Plan – Task execution like a boss
- Rinse and Repeat – superhero mom status activated
Tip 2: Prioritize
One of the superpowers moms possess is the ability to multitask. The problem here is that sometimes we try to be all things to all people. We then become stretched so thin that we are unable to effectively complete and unfortunately become – jane of all trades but master of none.
The key here to boost your productivity is to prioritize. Not everything is urgent and needs to be done right this minute. My favorite tool I use to combat this is the Eisenhower Matrix. It focuses on reviewing your tasks based on urgency and importance and scheduling accordingly. With this matrix your MVPs, that is, your Most Valuable Priorities will win out and get the nod to be done first. You can then schedule other tasks to be done accordingly.
Tip 3: Practice Time Management Tricks
Time management is all about making the best of your day when you have competing responsibilities and tasks. No matter how you swing it, you only have 24 hours in a day so you need to use your time in the best possible way to boost your productivity. There are several time management tools I use including time blocking and the Pomodoro Technique in collaboration with a daily planner. These help you to focus on both working hard and playing hard too.
Some time management strategies and tools you can try include:
- Time Blocking – scheduling every single part of your day into time blocks
- Pomodoro – Set your timer. Then work in short bursts of intense task completion focused work with a scheduled break in between each session
- Kanban Board – A visual board to help you organize and track goals. You can either use traditional sticky note style or a digital kanban software such as Trello
- Journaling – making a note of to- do tasks, tasks completed, review and planning for the next day. Either paper based or use a digital journal.
No matter what system here are some important time management steps you should follow:
- Identifying Tasks
- Prioritizing Tasks
- Track progress of tasks
- Task Completion
While completing all your tasks withing your specified time frame is important, do not be too hard on yourself. Remember your Smart Goals? Be realistic with your expectations for yourself and get as simple and specific as possible. Don’t forget to celebrate small victories and give yourself a high-five when you achieve them! You deserve it!
Tip 4: Delete Distractions to Boost Your Productivity
Distractions are everywhere. From devices to kids to other competing tasks. No matter how much we love them, unplanned, ad hoc tasks can really throw a spoke in your productivity wheel. The solution is to create a distraction detox. This will help you get laser focused and boost your productivity without the usual added interruptions.
Some distraction detox tips include:
- Schedule screen time – your work is not the only thing that needs to be scheduled. Time spent on social media aimlessly scrolling or watching videos can quickly add up.
- Create a Zen workspace without the sippy cups, building blocks and toys. Ensure you have a child free zone to keep you super focused
- Be sure to schedule in exercise an ‘me time’. Leisure is important for not only physical but mental health as well.
Tip 5: Tech Terrific
You should always aim to work smarter, not harder. This is one of the important keys to boost your productivity. Introducing tech to your daily schedule can significantly cut the tie spent on tasks and free you up to complete others. Using technology doesn’t have to be super complicated. In fact it is meant to simplify your workflow, not confuse it.
- Use productivity apps – There are many productivity resources aimed at helping you be more efficient
- Automation tools – schedule and automate as many processes as possible to free up time on a daily basis
- AI Tools – Don’t be afraid to use AI. It’s a super useful companion to jumpstart your tasks
There are many tech solutions available so it might become a bit tedious and send you down a rabbit hole. What works for someone else may not necessarily be the best fir for you. The trick is to try a few and find what best works for you
Tip 6: Me Time Magic
Self Care is one of the most elusive goals of busy moms. We spend so much time doing everything for everyone else that we sometimes neglect to take care of ourselves. Ideally when scheduling your week you should factor in physical workout and relaxation time to pamper and rejuvenate yourself. This is easier said than done and, unfortunately for many mompreneurs, it becomes a nice to have on our wish list.
for many of us, blocking out dedicated time for much needed self care seems impossible at first. But if you want to boost your productivity, the trick is to start small.
Here are some recommendations to help you get started:
- Take 5-minute self care breaks to recharge and for sanity preservation
- Wake up 15 minutes earlier to set the tone for your day. This is your quiet time and can be used for prayer, meditation or planning your day. Whatever you choose, ensure it’s all about you.
- Get outside. Once the weather permits be sure to get out and breathe some hopefully fresh air and get some sun – if you can
- Do something everyday to make you smile or laugh. Laughter is the best medicine for the soul
Conclusion – Proper Planning to Boost Your Productivity
No matter how hard we try to plan it is inevitable that hiccups will happen – and that’s okay! Sometimes you need to go with the flow and embrace the chaos and unpredictability of mompreneurship. Just as you toddler tantrums, spills and messes are temporary and you’ll get over, bypass and move on from them.
To all mompreneurs, the juggling process is real. Sometimes it takes some serious activation of supermom powers to get everything done on a daily basis. At the end of the day with proper planning to boost your productivity it is so worth it.
